Bar stools at 750 mm, counter stools at 650 mm
Two seat heights off one frame. The 750 mm stool takes a counter at 1050 to 1100 mm, the 650 mm stool takes one at 900 to 950 mm, and both are confirmed on a drawing before anything is cut.

Bar height is a number, not a mood
Height is what separates a bar stool from everything else: the seat sits high enough for a guest to rest their forearms on a counter top at 1050 to 1100 mm. In practice that means a 750 mm seat height. The gap between the seat and the underside of the counter is what makes the stool usable for a whole evening rather than ten minutes; below about 250 mm, knees hit the counter and the guest turns sideways to drink.
Most of what goes wrong in a bar fit-out is this one measurement being decided late, after the joinery is already drawn. The counter height is fixed by the bar top and the glass washer underneath. The stool has to follow it, not the other way round.
| Bar stool seat height | 750 mm standard · 720 / 780 mm on request |
|---|---|
| Pairs with counter top | 1050–1100 mm |
| Overall height | 990–1080 mm depending on the back |
| Footrest above floor | 250–300 mm, welded and ground as part of the frame |
| Frame | Solid ash, stainless steel, or powder-coated steel tube |
| Load rating | 150 kg on the assembled stool, frame and joints included |
| Upholstery | Contract vinyl, PU, wool, bouclé, or COM |
| Minimum order | On request · typically 20–30 pieces per model |
| Production | 15–30 days after sample approval |
Two heights, one range
Counters set at 900 to 950 mm take a 650 mm counter stool, not a bar stool. The 100 mm difference is not cosmetic: it separates a counter where people perch for a drink from a counter where people eat with a plate in front of them. Get it wrong upwards and knees are against the counter; get it wrong downwards and the guest reaches up to their glass all evening.
Both heights run off the same frame, the same finish palette and the same upholstery family. One room can hold 750 mm stools at the main bar and 650 mm stools at a window counter and still read as one scheme, because the difference is a leg length rather than a different product.
| Counter stool seat height | 650 mm standard · 620 / 680 mm on request |
|---|---|
| Pairs with counter top | 900–950 mm |
| Overall height | 880–990 mm depending on the back |
| Seat pan | 400 mm deep and dished — the minimum for eating at a counter |
| Footrest above floor | 230–270 mm, welded into the frame |
| Load rating | 150 kg on the assembled stool |
Where the 650 mm height earns its place
- Drinking counter against a window. Backless stools slide fully under, so the aisle behind stays clear and the window does not look blocked from the street.
- Counter that also takes plates. Low back and a seat pan of at least 380 mm, because the guest shifts their weight forward to eat. Below that, the front edge cuts into the thigh after twenty minutes.
- High table in a snug or side room. Full back, often upholstered to the shoulder, so the table reads as a separate room inside the room.
Three decisions that decide whether the stool survives
How the footrest is fixed
Footrests bolted onto the legs after assembly work loose inside a season. The load goes through the joint, not the tube. We weld it into the frame, grind the weld flat, then polish — it reads as one continuous piece of metal because it is one.
Where the load actually lands
Guests drop onto a stool from standing height, not sit down gently. That impact travels down the legs, not across the seat, so the rating that matters is the assembled unit. Our 150 kg figure is tested on the whole stool, not on a seat pad in a press.
What the seat is covered in
Beer, citrus and tonic are what a bar seat actually meets. Fabric that wipes clean in a pub will still look new at year three; velvet that photographs beautifully in a showroom will not. We quote both and tell you which costs less to keep.
Backless, low-back, or full back
This is a layout question before it is a design question. Backless stools slide completely under the counter, so the aisle behind them can be narrower — often 900 mm instead of 1100 mm. On a tight site that difference is a whole row of covers.
The low back gives the guest something to lean on without blocking the sight line from the door to the back bar. The full back closes that sight line and creates a private pocket, which is right for a snug and wrong for a room where the bartender needs to see the floor.
Non-standard counters are the normal case
Old pub buildings are rarely level and rarely standard. We regularly build to 730 mm, 770 mm and 800 mm seats for counters set at heights nobody drew a decade ago. There is no tooling charge for a size that is off the catalogue, because the frame is cut per order rather than pulled from a mould.
The same applies to upholstery: send a swatch, a photograph, or the name of a fabric house, and we quote against it. If you want a mix — leather on the counter stools, wool on the floor chairs — that is one order, one container, one set of documents.
What we need to quote
Three numbers and one picture will get you a firm price: the counter length, the counter top height, and how many stools you want along it. Photographs and plans of the room help us flag where a back will block a walkway. Reply comes back inside three working days with a layout, heights, finishes and a written quotation.
