Rattan back stool with fixed arms
Woven rattan in a dark colour is the one texture that holds up in a room with no daylight, because it breaks up a flat wall of upholstery without adding a pattern.

Fixed arms and seat pitch
Fixed arms give a stool a definite front and back, which suits a counter where every guest faces the same way and nothing needs to turn. They cost 60 to 80 mm of width each side, so a four-seat run becomes a three-seat run, and that has to be decided against the counter length rather than after it.
What they buy is a place to put a forearm while the other hand holds a glass — on a long counter the arms are what turns forty minutes into an hour.
Wooden legs on a metal base
The combination exists because the two parts do different jobs. Timber legs take the visual weight out of the frame and let the stool sit in a room with timber joinery; the metal base spreads the load at the floor and stops a slender leg punching through a soft floor covering.
Where the joint between leg and base is visible, look for a collar rather than a bare butt joint. The collar takes the sideways load as the stool is dragged, which is the movement that opens the joint first.
