Bamboo stool on ash base
Bamboo is not a cheap substitute for timber: it is a grass that grows straight and takes a bend, which is why a back made from it can be thin without a frame behind it.

Why bamboo in a bar
Bamboo is dense, dimensionally stable and does not absorb a spill the way an open-grained timber does. On a seat and back it gives a light, warm surface that reads more relaxed than a lacquered frame, which is what a lounge floor is usually after.
Where it fails is abrasion at the edges, so the edge detail on a bamboo seat matters more than the face.
Ash base, bamboo top
The base is the part that takes the load and the knocks, and ash is the timber that carries a slim leg furthest without flexing. Splitting the materials lets the visible part be light and the working part be strong.
