Two mechanisms, one column
Lift and swivel on the same column make two wear surfaces in one place, and the column has to be sized for both. On a stainless frame that is straightforward, because the column is machined rather than hidden inside an upholstered shroud.
What to check is the seal at the top of the column. Open columns collect whatever is spilled on them and the lift stiffens within a season.
Why stainless and adjustment go together
Painted frames that are adjusted constantly loses its coating at the sliding joint first. Stainless has no coating to lose, so the joint stays clean and the mechanism keeps working after the paint would have failed.
