Bentwood stool, woven back

Woven backs let air through, and on a packed counter in July that is the difference between a guest staying for a second drink and a guest standing up to cool down.

Woven back, and what it does to a hot room

Solid backs on a packed counter trap heat against the guest; a woven one lets it through. That sounds like a small thing until a room holds forty people at eleven at night and the difference between a breathable seat and a padded one is whether anyone sits down at all.

The weave also reads as texture from the door, which is why it survives every change of fashion in bar interiors. What it does need is a check on the finish: an unsealed weave snags on clothing and on the strap of a bag, and a sealed one does neither.

Bentwood frames

Bent frames have no joint where the eye expects one, which is both the look and the engineering: the load travels through continuous grain instead of through two screws. Steam bending only works with the right species and the right moisture content, so the frame can be made thinner than a jointed equivalent and still carry the same weight.

The weak point moves to the seat connection, where the bent frame meets a flat panel. That joint should be a shaped block, not a screw through the frame wall.
