Fixed seating is joinery, and it is measured on site
Banquettes look like furniture and behave like joinery. They have to land against a wall that is never perfectly straight, meet the floor at a height that is never perfectly level, and take the width of the room without leaving a gap that collects everything swept off the table.
We build to the measured run length, including the scribe allowance at each end, and we ask for the wall dimensions before the drawing is issued rather than after.

The back is the decision
The banquette back can be three quite different things, and the choice changes the room more than the upholstery does:
- Low, upholstered to shoulder height. Keeps the room visible and lets sound move. Right for a busy front room where the seating should not feel like a separate space.
- Full height, upholstered. Quieter, more private, and the best option for a snug or a back room where people book rather than drop in.
- Timber panelled to the ceiling. Reads as part of the building rather than as furniture. The most expensive of the three, and the one that survives longest, because timber takes knocks that fabric does not.
Four measurements we cannot do without

Wall run, at seat height
Not at the floor. Old walls lean. The dimension that matters is the one taken at roughly 450 mm, which is where the seat frame meets the wall.

Floor to window sill or dado
Decides the maximum back height, and whether the back can be panelled rather than upholstered.

Door swing and access
Four-metre runs built in one piece cannot turn a corner on the stairs. We split where access requires and hide the joint in a corner or behind an arm.

Table centres
The tables are set out first, then the seating run is divided so that every table is centred between two seats. Guessing this produces a bench that lines up with nothing.
Corners, and why they cost more
The straight run is a bench. The corner is a piece of joinery. Inside and outside corners need framing, a mitre or a post, and a seat that does not pinch. The corner is also where a run gets its rigidity, so it is not a place to save money by leaving the framing out.
One straight run beats two shy ones. Where the room allows, a continuous run that meets the wall at both ends reads calmer and wastes less space at the corners than two separate benches with a gap between them.
Loose chairs against the open side
The banquette is only half of a booth. The open side takes loose chairs, and those chairs need to match the banquette's seat height and upholstery or the booth looks assembled from two rooms. We build both, so the seat height, seat pan and fabric are matched on the drawing.
What to send
Send a plan with the wall runs dimensioned, the floor-to-sill height, and a photograph of the room. If the tables are already specified, send their size and centres. That is enough to issue a drawing for approval, and the drawing is what the workshop builds from.
Do you need to measure the site yourself?
No. We work from dimensions you take, with photographs, and we ask for the wall run at seat height rather than at the floor, plus the floor-to-sill height. Those two numbers remove most of the risk.
What seat depth is right for a banquette?
480 to 560 mm depending on the back angle. Anything under 480 mm feels like a bench rather than a seat; over 560 mm the guest ends up perched forward to reach the table.
Can a long run be built in one piece?
Where access allows, yes. Above roughly four metres, or where stairs and doors intervene, we split the run and put the joint in a corner or behind an arm so it reads as intentional.
How are the tables fixed?
Either anchored to the banquette plinth, which keeps a fixed layout, or loose on a floor plate, which lets staff pull a table out for cleaning. Both are drawn before manufacture, because the plinth changes with the choice.
Is fixed seating made of timber or steel?
Timber frame with a plywood seat deck and an upholstered front, on a plinth. Steel appears where a run is entirely free-standing or where the client wants an open frame with a visible toe recess.
