Cane improves, vinyl does not
Woven cane darkens and takes on a patina as it is handled. Vinyl goes the other way: it looks best on day one and then slowly takes on the room. Putting the cane band at shoulder height means the part of the booth that ages gracefully is the part people touch.
It also means the back has a texture that reads from across a dim room, where a flat grey panel would disappear.
What cane will not take
No scrubbing, no soaking, no solvent. Woven cane is a plant material in a timber frame, and a wet cloth left against it will lift the weave within a season.
Specify this where the room is not a wet one. In a late bar where everything gets hosed at two in the morning, a solid upholstered back is the right answer and this is not.
Frame carries the panel
The cane sits in a rebate in a 25 mm timber frame rather than being stapled to a board. That frame is the structural element, and it also gives the panel room to move with humidity instead of splitting.
Tight frames split cane in a dry winter. The rebate has 1.5 mm of clearance per side for exactly that reason.
