Why a long buttoned back has to be built in sections
Buttoning pulls the cover down through the padding to the frame at every button, which means the cover has to be stretched and fixed from the edges of the panel it sits on. Past roughly 2.4 m the pull needed to reach the middle of one panel cannot be applied evenly, and the diamonds in the centre sit shallower than the ones at the ends.
So the run is built as sections, each with its own frame edge, and the joints are set behind the back seam where the upholstery meets. From the front of the room the run is one face; from behind, it is four sections bolted together, which is what allows it to be carried through a door at all.
The plinth is where a long run shows its age
On a four-metre run the plinth takes more contacts than anything else in the booth: boots, chair legs, the cleaning machine, the vacuum head. Stained timber takes a scuff and can be touched up locally; a painted finish shows every one and a veneered one delaminates at the bottom edge where water sits.
Recessing it 50 mm keeps the finished face out of the line of a boot and puts the scuff on a shadow line instead.
Built for an industrial room
Under an exposed ceiling the booth is the only soft surface in the room, so it carries all the acoustic work. 50 mm of foam over a hardwood frame with a buttoned face absorbs more than a panel back at the same thickness, because the buttons break the face into small curved surfaces rather than one flat reflector.
If the room echoes, this is the build to specify before adding anything to the ceiling.
