Two cool neutrals, two values
Slate blue and grey timber sit on the same side of the colour wheel and far apart in value. That contrast is what keeps the piece from reading as one grey object, and it is a more reliable way to make a room feel bigger than adding mirrors.
Get the values too close and the booth disappears into the wall behind it. That is a plan decision worth testing with two swatches on site before the cover is cut.
Grey stain, not grey paint
Paint chips, and a chip on a grey frame is a bright mark. Grey stain on rubberwood leaves the grain showing and takes a knock without losing its colour, because there is no film to break.
Matt lacquer over it, two coats, with a UV blocker. Grey stain under direct sun goes slightly warm, and the blocker slows that to something you will not notice between seasons.
Channel depth on a mid-value cover
On a mid-value colour, channel depth reads as shadow rather than as colour change, so the divisions stay visible in flat light. Forty-five millimetres at 35 mm of foam is enough relief for that, and shallow enough that the seams stay cleanable.
Past 70 mm on a colour this calm, the pattern starts to do all the work and the material stops reading.
