Hold everything else still

Four colours in one room is a scheme. Four colours and two frame finishes is a showroom. The difference is that a scheme needs a constant, and here the constant is the frame: same section, same stain, same height on every piece.

That single decision is what lets the colours do the talking. The eye reads variation in one variable and accepts it as intentional.

How the colours are distributed

Even distribution across the floor gives a nursery look. Grouping two of the same colour together and then a contrast gives the room a rhythm, and it also lets you control which colours sit near the door.

Order the set by bay rather than by colour. Crates are marked with the colour and the bay number, and the plan matches.

Flat backs, on purpose

Tufting on four colours would make each piece read differently and pull attention onto the pattern rather than the colour. Flat panels keep the set consistent and put all of the variation in the vinyl.

Forty millimetres of foam over a flat panel also gives the cheapest route to re-covering, which matters when a scheme change is likely before the furniture wears out.
