Grinding welds is the whole job

Steel shows what is under the paint. Welds left proud and coated over read as a ridge, and the coating is thinner on that ridge than anywhere else, so it is also the first place to break down.

Every joint on this frame is ground flush, sanded to 180 grit, then powder coated at 80 microns. Under a hand along the top rail there is nothing to feel.

Frame as the design

On a timber box, the base is part of the furniture. On this frame, the base is a line, and the eye follows it along the run and up over the end.

That line is why the frame is 40 mm square rather than a flat bar. Square section catches a highlight along its top edge and reads as a drawn line; flat bar just reads as a shadow.

Steel in a wet room

Powder coat on steel is fine in a bar. What it does not survive is a scratch down to bare metal, which then rusts under the coating and lifts it in a ring.

Where the frame sits in a route that takes trolleys, specify the touch-in pen with the order. Five seconds with a touch-in pen at the first scratch is the difference between a frame that lasts and one that goes scabby.
