Replaceable panels in a piece of fixed furniture
Banquettes are usually specified once and lived with for a decade, which is a long time for any fabric to stay in a scheme. Building the back as a fabric insert in a timber frame means the part that dates can be swapped without touching the seat, the carcass or the wall fixing.
The insert is 520 by 480 mm and hooks into the frame behind the seat, so it comes out from the front with the seat lifted. The room can change its pattern in a season without a joiner on site.
Three materials, one piece of furniture
Timber carcass, leather seat and fabric back is three different wear lives in one object. The leather takes the traffic and cleans with a cloth; the timber takes the impact and can be touched up; the fabric takes the least contact and shows the most. Putting each one where it gets the load it can survive is why the split works.
The risk is at the joints, where fabric meets timber. The insert is framed rather than stapled into the carcass, so the fabric edge never touches the timber directly and there is no line of compressed pile to go flat.
Checked fabric and a dark room
The check reads at a distance where a plain fabric of the same colour disappears. In a room with dark timber and low light, that is the point: the back panels carry the pattern and the rest of the booth stays quiet. The risk is at close range, where a large check can look busy on a small panel — 30 mm or smaller is the safer scale for inserts this size.
Any fabric can be specified. The frame and the insert size do not change, so the choice can be made after the sample arrives.
