Narrow channels on a tall back

Channel width has to be read against back height. At 950 mm, a 70 mm channel gives a back with six or seven divisions and the proportions hold. Stretch the same back to 1100 mm and those same 70 mm lines become long columns, and the piece starts to look like joinery rather than seating.

38 mm over an 1100 mm back gives the divisions a 1:29 ratio, close to what the eye reads as fabric rather than structure. The channels are also shallower in section, 45 mm of foam instead of 60, because a tall back does not need the same depth of padding behind the shoulder.

Walnut stain, black seat

Two dark materials will merge unless one of them has a texture. The stain here is a matt lacquer with the grain showing through, and the leather is a fine-grain pigment finish, so the eye separates them by surface rather than by colour.

Black leather that stays black is a matter of pigment, not dye. Pigment finishes sit on the surface and hold their depth; aniline black goes grey at the seat edge within a year.

Built as two halves over 2.4 m

Past 2.4 m the crate stops going through a service door. The run ships in numbered halves with the joint set behind a channel rather than through one, so the seam disappears into the pattern.

The joint is bolted through plates inside the carcass. Nothing is visible once the halves are together, and the seat foam is continuous across it.
