Japanese Wood-crafted Booth Seating With Under-seat Storage

Modular construction is not a cheaper way of building a banquette; it is the version that survives a room being re-planned in year three without the whole run going into a skip.

Modules that line up, or modules that look like modules

The failure mode of a modular run is the joint. If each module is upholstered on its own frame, every seam shows a small step where the padding meets, and a wall that was meant to read as one piece reads as six boxes in a row. We build the modules with a bolted flange set behind the back seam, so the seam falls inside the upholstery rather than on it, and the sections are aligned and numbered at the factory before they are packed.

On site the run is assembled left to right against the drawing, which also means the fitter is not making alignment decisions at 11 pm on the last day of a fit-out.

What modular buys you three years later

Built as one piece, a run has one future: it stays exactly the length it is until the room is stripped. The same run can be shortened by taking a section out, lengthened by ordering one more module, or turned around a new corner by swapping the end unit. In a lease where the floor plan gets re-drawn, that difference is the whole cost of the banquette.

The order has to be right the first time for this to work, which is why we keep the module drawing on file against the job rather than against the invoice.

Ivory, and the honest maintenance note

Ivory contract vinyl wipes clean and keeps a room bright where the wall behind it is dark, which is why it appears in so many fit-outs. It also shows a scuff from a boot at two metres. If the run sits on a route where people walk in from a street, put the ivory above the seat and a darker material on the plinth, or accept that the plinth will need re-covering before the seat does.

We quote the plinth separately so that decision can be made per job rather than per range.
