Leather Booth Seating Sofa For Bar
Ribs on a plinth face are cut from solid stock with the grain running up, not from a panel. Cross-grain ribs cup in a dry winter and the face opens along the whole run.

Solid ribs, grain up
Ribbed plinths can be made two ways: cut from a panel, or milled from solid stock with the grain running vertically. The panel version is faster and it is also the one that cups. In a room that dries out in winter, cross-grain ribs open at the edges and the face of the plinth stops being a flat plane.
These are 25 mm solid ribs on a 45 mm pitch, glued and pinned to a continuous backer. The backer takes the movement; the ribs stay straight.
Ribs do what a flat plinth cannot
Flat timber under a grey seat is a large area of one material with nothing in it. Ribs put a shadow line every 45 mm, which makes the base read as a texture rather than a slab and hides the scuffs that a flat face collects along its lower third.
They also carry verticality up from the floor, which matters in a long low room where everything else runs horizontally.
Grey, over warm timber
Mid-grey over pale warm timber works because neither is trying to be the colour. Put a saturated cover on the same plinth and the ribs become a decorative element competing with it.
Where the room needs colour, put it in the loose chairs instead. They can be changed in year four; the plinth cannot.
