Contemporary Wood Booth Seating, Modern Dining Height

Flutes and floor lights

Fluted faces catch a light at a low angle and turn it into a row of vertical bands. Where a room has uplights or a strip along the floor, the piece does its own lighting, and nothing has to be added to the upholstery to give it interest.

The reverse is also true: under flat overhead light the flutes go nearly invisible. Where the room has no low light source, a fluted plinth is money spent on something nobody will see.

The flutes return up the sides

Stopping the flutes at the front face leaves the side panel plain, and the eye reads that as an unfinished end. Carrying them around both returns closes the piece and makes the base read as a box rather than a skirt.

Corners are mitred, not butted. On a dark stain a butt joint shows as a thin bright line for the life of the piece.

Charcoal over warm timber

Charcoal against a warm stained timber is two dark-ish materials of different temperature, and the contrast is subtle enough that it survives bad lighting. Black against the same timber would be a harder line and would fight the flutes.

That is why the cover here is charcoal rather than black, and why the stain is warm rather than grey.
