Long runs need a joint in the seat, not just in the frame

One cushion over four metres looks correct on day one and wrong on day four hundred. The foam compresses where people actually sit, which is in front of each table rather than evenly along the run, and a single pad cannot hide that because there is nowhere for the compressed area to go.

Separate pads at 1200 mm put a joint in front of each table instead of in the middle of one. The compression is then contained inside each section, and the run reads level along its whole length even after the pads have taken a couple of years of use.

Re-covering one pad instead of lifting the run

The pads sit loose on the frame and hook at the back edge, so a single worn section can be lifted out and re-covered without taking the run off the wall. In a room where one table by the door takes most of the traffic, that is the difference between a re-cover and a re-build.

The frame is oak and stays visible below the pads as an exposed plinth, which also means the run does not depend on the upholstery to look finished. Take every pad out and the frame still reads as furniture rather than as a carcass.

Sage on oak, in daylight

This pairing is specified for rooms with a lot of daylight, because sage goes grey as the light falls and a lighter green holds up better against a pale floor than a deeper one. Under warm evening light the same colour reads warmer and the oak reads darker, which is the reason the two are usually chosen together rather than separately.

Any colour is available on the pads. Keeping the frame in a single oak finish is what holds a scheme together when the pads are changed later.
