Matt black, because gloss black shows every lamp
Black absorbs light, so the only thing the eye sees on a black back is the reflection. In a gloss finish that reflection is the pendant, the window and the phone of the person opposite, and the diamond pattern disappears behind it.
The finish here is matt, with a hand-feel that keeps a slight sheen. Diamonds at 120 mm read as a lattice of light and shadow instead of a set of bright spots, which is the whole reason to button a back.
Buttoned, and cleanable
Tuft depth at 22 mm, and the buttons are set in a straight line rather than pulled hard. That keeps each well shallow enough to wipe out with a cloth, which matters in a black piece because anything left in a well shows as a grey mark.
Buttons are covered in the same leather and stitched, not glued. Glue a button and it loses its cover at the first hard clean.
Nothing fixing it to anything
Freestanding, on a solid base with four adjustable feet. The mass sits low, so a guest pushing up from one end does not tip the other.
The piece is 1100 mm at the back, which is tall enough to feel like a booth and short enough that the room still reads across it. In a low ceiling basement that combination matters more than the finish.
