Nordic solid wood bar table, 900 mm top
900 mm square is the smallest top that lets four people stand at a bar table without turning their shoulders, and the largest that still leaves a walk line beside it.

The corner is where groups form
Standing zones fail at the edges. Small tables along a wall work for pairs and empty as soon as a group of four arrives, because nobody wants to split across two tables. One 900 mm square in the corner takes that group and keeps them there, which is the whole economics of a standing area.
Size is also the limit: at 1200 mm the same four people stand further apart, talk less, and the table starts to block the route past it.
All-timber, and the honest limits
Timber at this height is stable if it is built as a frame rather than a panel on legs, and if the top is thick enough not to bow between supports. Thin tops look identical in a photograph and sag within a year of standing-height use, where the load is a hand pressing down rather than a plate resting.
The finish is the part that fails first in a bar. Oil and wax look better every month and need attention; lacquer is harder and shows every ring. Either is defensible as long as the maintenance is planned for rather than discovered.
Matching the rest of the run
Height stays at 1060 mm so this table can sit at the end of a run of 700 or 800 mm tops without breaking the standing line. Species and stain are matched across the run on request, which matters more than any single piece.
