What stacking costs structurally
To stack, a chair has to lose the things that make a timber frame stiff: the stretchers that tie the legs, and often the seat rail depth. That is why most stackable chairs are steel or moulded, and why a stackable timber chair is worth specifying carefully.
The compromise here is a deeper seat rail with the leg splay shaped so each chair lands on the one below at a fixed angle. The stack is stable because the geometry locates it, not because the chairs are tight against each other.
PU on a stackable seat
Stackable chairs get handled by the stack, not one at a time, so the cover takes edge contact from the chair above it. Sealed PU with a stitched edge survives that; woven fabric frets through at the same point within a season.
Eight high is the working stack for a 2.4 m store cupboard. Beyond that the stack gets awkward to lift and the top chairs take the knocks.
