Where boucle belongs in a pub
Boucle reads as soft and expensive, and it is neither hard-wearing nor easy to clean. That makes it right for lounges, snug corners and wait areas, and wrong for any floor where people eat with their hands standing up.
The loop pile also snags. Rings, bag straps and the edge of a tray catch the loops and pull them out, and a pulled loop cannot be pushed back invisibly. Keep boucle seating away from the service route and it lasts years; put it on the busiest run and it looks tired in months.
Why the back is curved and padded
Flat padding on a chair this low sits against the shoulder blades and feels like a plank after an hour. Curving it puts the contact down at the waist, where a guest actually leans, and the padding is doing work there rather than decoration.
Splayed legs at the rear add stability on carpet without adding visual weight, which is what makes the chair look light enough for a lounge.
