French retro chair, velvet upholstery
French retro is a shaped back and a curved leg, and both of those are the parts that get skimped when a frame is copied badly.

What the shape costs
Shaped backs need the frame cut from wider stock than a straight back, and a curved leg needs either steam bending or a cut profile. Both are the steps a cheap copy removes, and the result is a chair that looks French in the thumbnail and like a plain chair in the room.
Velvet covers that difference well, because the pile reads across a curve and hides a back that has fewer facets than it should.
Velvet over a shaped frame
Upholstering a curved back takes more panels than a flat one and more seams, and where those seams land decides how the chair ages. Seams pulled onto the curve rather than into the corner stay tight; seams along a curve slacken as the cover settles.
Feet on a shaped leg wear at the tip first. Ask for a replaceable glide rather than a felt pad stuck on by hand, or the chair starts rocking on a hard floor within a year.
