One surface for every three guests
Standing guests hold a glass in one hand and need somewhere to put it down within two or three steps. At one 600 mm table per three guests, a tavern floor has a surface everywhere without turning into a grid of tables. Push the ratio to one per six and the room reads as crowded even when it is not.
The tables are light enough to move with one hand when a band needs the floor, which is why the base is a 400 mm disc rather than a heavier one.
Where a 400 mm disc is and is not enough
Four hundred millimetres of cast iron holds a 600 mm top with a glass at the rim, but it will not hold a 700 mm top with a guest leaning on one side. The 700 mm version is available with a 450 mm disc for that reason, and specifying the small base under the large top is how tables get returned.
Textured black on a standing floor
Standing floors put hands and shoes against the furniture constantly, and a smooth black finish shows every one of those contacts as a sheen. Texture scatters the light and hides them, which is why every table in this range that is meant to be stood at is textured rather than smooth.
