Distressed finish that can be lived with
The brushed and stained top with a matt lacquer takes a scratch as a lighter line that fades into the grain pattern rather than as a bright scar on a uniform surface. On a high-gloss top every mark is permanent and visible; on this finish the wear becomes part of the piece, which is the whole point of the style.
The lacquer still seals the timber, so the top can be wiped and a spilled drink does not soak in. Distressed refers to the appearance, not to an unfinished surface.
Tan leather and warm timber
Tan against medium brown timber is a narrow tonal range, and it works because the leather catches light at a different angle to the wood: one is matte and directional, the other has a low sheen. In a warm-lit room the two separate without needing a contrast colour.
Tan also ages visibly, which suits the style. At three years a tan bench looks better than at one, where a black one looks the same and a grey one looks worn.
Benches and chairs in one palette
Bench runs along the wall and club chairs in the middle is the arrangement that gives a neighbourhood bar both density and flexibility, and buying them together keeps the leather from the same batch. Two tan leathers from different batches are visibly different colours, which is the mistake that shows up a month after installation.
