Pin lock or gas, and which to specify
Gas columns adjust smoothly but are consumables: the cylinder loses pressure over a few thousand cycles and eventually will not hold a tall position under load. On a table that is adjusted twice a day, that is a two-year life. Pin locks never lose pressure, but they only offer three fixed positions.
For a bar that switches between two known heights, the pin lock is the better engineering. For a room adapted to events at arbitrary heights, gas is worth the service cost.
The folding X-frame
Folding frames mean the tables stack flat against a wall when a floor is cleared, and they also make shipping cheap: a hundred tables go in the volume of fifteen. The weakness is the hinge, so the frame here locks at both the pivot and the leg spreader rather than relying on the pivot alone.
Thirty millimetres over a 1200 mm span
The 1200 mm oblong top on a single column needs thickness at the ends or it whips when someone leans on a corner. Thirty millimetres of solid wood over a steel subframe tied to the column plate keeps the ends stiff, which is why the top bolts to the column through a plate rather than onto a bare boss.
