Why pale timber and black steel is a durable pairing

The life of a bar table is decided by two separate clocks. The frame either holds or it does not, and that runs to ten years or more on a welded steel frame. The top gets sanded, refinished and eventually replaced, and pale timber can be sanded back to bare wood twice without going thin.

Because the two parts wear at different rates, keeping them visually separate is right: a black frame under a pale top still looks correct when the top has been refinished and the frame has a few scuffs on the lower rail.

One frame section for both heights

The same 50 mm square section carries a 750 mm table and a 1050 mm communal top, which means one floor can mix heights and still read as one order. At 1050 mm the frame is doing more work against racking, so the leg frames are welded rectangles rather than bolt-together frames.

Stool seats and the wet-glass problem

Every stool here has a sealed timber seat rather than bare wood, because a wet glass left on an unsealed seat overnight leaves a dark ring that will not come out. The seal also stops a seat absorbing a spill and swelling at the edge, which is the failure that makes a stool wobble.
