Red and green as a pair
Both colours sit on the warm side of the spectrum, so under a 2700 K lamp they read as variations of one tone rather than as two competing schemes. That is why the combination survives in old pubs and looks accidental in new ones: it only works if the rest of the room is timber and brass rather than grey and chrome.
Swapping the red bays for green later is a re-cover, not a re-furnish, because the frames are identical.
Solid wood legs, corner blocked
Pub tables get pushed, dragged and leaned on, and the joint that fails is the leg-to-apron. Dowels alone loosen; corner blocks glued and screwed into the inside of the joint spread the load across the whole corner, which is what keeps a table solid after five years of being moved every night.
Legs in solid timber also take a knock without denting, where a hollow section would show a crease that never comes out.
Booth bays for the wall, tub chairs for the middle
Booths go against the wall because they need only one side to get in and out of; tub chairs go in the middle because they can be turned. The set is designed so the two can be re-arranged into any proportion without the room looking mismatched.
