Retro American Bar Set With Wood Tables And Club Seating
Buttoned banquettes are the one piece of furniture that changes the acoustics of a room as well as the look, because a soft back behind a guest absorbs the conversation they are having.

Synthetic leather has caught up where it matters
On a banquette, the enemy is not wear but cleaning: a cigar room gets wiped, and a real hide will dry and crack under the solvents used. Modern synthetic leather with a knitted backing takes those cleaners without hardening, and it holds a colour like oxblood more evenly than a dyed hide, which shifts tone across the piece.
What it does not do is age. Five years in, a synthetic banquette still looks like the day it was fitted, where a hide would have a patina. In a members' room, that is usually judged a fair trade.
Banquette depth and table height
The bench is 700 mm deep, which is 100 mm more than a dining bench, so a guest can sit back with a drink rather than perch forward. With that depth the table drops to 620 mm for a lounge arrangement, because a 750 mm table with a deep bench puts the guest's arms above the surface.
Where the room is used for food as well, the bench stays at 700 mm and the table goes back to 750 mm. The two configurations use the same frame, so the decision can be made per bay.
Acoustics as a side effect
Buttoned banquettes along two walls take the edge off a hard room. Soft furnishing behind and beside the guest absorbs speech, which lowers the noise floor enough that a group of six can talk without raising their voices. In a timber-panelled room this is often the difference between a usable space and a shouting match.
