Bench on one side, stools on the other
Benches hold more people per metre than loose stools, because nobody needs to get in from behind. Six on a 1800 mm bench is comfortable; the same run of loose stools gives four. Pairing the bench with stools on the open side gives the table a fixed side and a flexible one, which is what a bar needs when the group size changes through the evening.
The bench sits at 450 mm and the stools at 750 mm, so the seat heights differ by 300 mm against a 1050 mm top. That is the correct ratio for both to be usable at the same table.
Plank top and movement
The 2400 mm plank top is glued up from boards with the grain alternating, so the panel moves as a unit rather than cupping. The boards are 140 mm wide, which is the width that keeps the glue lines from reading as stripes at a distance.
The top is buttoned to the leg frames from underneath rather than screwed through the surface, so seasonal movement slides under the frame instead of splitting the board at a screw hole.
Removable cushion covers
Bench cushions in a bar take more wear than any other upholstery in the room, because a bench seat is slid along rather than sat down on. Covers that zip off mean a stained cushion is re-covered from the same roll in an afternoon, rather than the bench being recovered or the run being reupholstered.
