The storage stool, honestly
The hinged seat over a 12 litre void holds about eight bottles of glassware, or one cloth roll and a spare ashtray. It is not a substitute for a store room, and it should not be sold as one. What it does is take the small clutter off the floor, and in a room where the only storage is behind the bar that matters more than it sounds.
The hinge is the part that fails: a plain butt hinge on a seat that is sat on five hundred times a week works loose at the screws. The version here uses a concealed piano hinge on a steel plate, so the load spreads along the whole seat edge rather than into four screw holes.
Round tops on industrial bases
The cast disc base under a 700 mm round top gives a stable table that leaves the floor clear of legs, and the steel column keeps the footprint small enough that four stools fit around it. Where the same base carries a square top the corners overhang the disc and the table tips more easily, which is why the round version is the one specified for high tables.
Timber tone against black steel
Natural clear lacquer keeps the timber pale, which against a black column gives a hard contrast that reads as industrial. Staining the top would close that contrast and the set would read as retro instead. The choice of finish is doing more work here than the shape of the table.
