Detail that survives low light
Under a 2200 K lamp at head height, a dark surface has to give the eye something to read, and the two things that work are a visible grain and a stitched seam. Flat dark leather with a plain seam closes up into a shape; a seam in a piped welt catches the light along its length and keeps the piece legible. That is why every piece here has a welt rather than a plain stitched edge.
The timber carries the same job on the table side: a dark stain over open grain shows a texture under a raking light where a filled and polished surface shows nothing.
Square or round, and when it matters
Whiskey rooms usually pair two guests across a small table, so an 800 mm square top sets a bottle, two glasses and an ashtray without crowding. Round is better if the room is tight, because there is no corner to catch a hip when a guest turns to leave. The frames are the same, so the choice can be made late.
Why the sofa is a two-seat
In a back bar, a two-seat sofa keeps the group sitting forward and talking, where a three-seat pulls one guest into the middle with nothing to lean on. The buttoning on the back is structural as much as decorative: the pockets stop the foam migrating, which is what keeps a leather back looking sharp after three years of the same posture.
