The curve at the knee is what dates a copy
American vintage chairs from the forties and fifties were bent on steam presses with a fixed radius, and the radius is small: a tight curve just behind the knee that supports the sitter without a visible joint. Modern reproductions usually run a wider, softer curve because it is easier to press, and the wider curve is what makes a chair look like a banqueting seat rather than like a period piece.
The frames here are steam-bent to the tighter radius with a glued scarf at the back rail, which is the same construction the originals used. It is slower to make than a cut-and-joined back, and it is the only way to get the silhouette right.
Dark stain over solid wood, not a printed veneer
Dark walnut stain on solid timber takes the finish unevenly across the grain, which is what gives the surface depth under low light. Printed veneer on MDF takes the same tone everywhere, and in a dim room it reads as flat. The trade-off is that solid timber moves: a top of this size will open a hairline at a joint over a dry winter and close again in summer.
Round tables for conversation
Four guests at a 700 mm round table all sit the same distance from the middle, so nobody is on the end of a bench. That is why round tables dominate wine bars: the table is a conversation rather than a service station, and the base leaves the floor clear of legs.
