Contemporary Black Titanium Cocktail Table And Stool Set

The finish on a cocktail table is doing more work than the shape, because a black that reads as flat has no depth under a spot light and disappears into the floor.

PVD black versus paint black

Paint sits on top of the metal and wears off at the edges within a season of a busy floor, leaving bright steel rings around every table top. PVD is a vacuum-deposited layer that becomes part of the surface, at a hardness close to a hardened tool steel, so the ring that forms at a table edge is a scuff rather than a chip through to substrate. That is the difference between a black set that still looks black after two years and one that looks silver at the edges.

PVD also keeps the base tone slightly warm rather than blue-black, which is why it holds up under warm low lighting where paint reads flat grey.

Weight at the bottom, thin at the top

The visual trick in a cocktail table is a column that is barely visible against a dark floor. Thirty-eight millimetres of column will not hold a full pint at the rim of a 700 mm top on its own, so the mass sits in a cast iron disc, and the column is only carrying compression. That is how a table can look like a floating disc and still not tip.

Backless stools for a standing room

In a standing area the stool is a rest, not a seat, so nobody needs a back. Backless stools take a third less floor space per guest, and at 320 mm they can be tucked against the column between services so the floor reads as clear.
