Distressed timber is a finish, not a defect
Industrial interiors read as honest only if the wear looks like it happened rather than like it was printed on. The timber here is brushed to open the grain, then stained dark, then given a thin matt lacquer that leaves the open grain visible. That finish takes knocks without a visible ring, which is the practical benefit: a high-gloss top in a taproom shows every glass mark within a month.
The trade-off is that a distressed top cannot be spot-repaired. When it eventually needs re-finishing, the whole top is sanded back and re-done, which is a workshop job rather than a wipe-over.
Iron versus steel for the frame
Iron sections are thicker-walled than the steel tube used in a modern set, so the frame is heavier and the set does not walk across the floor when a room fills up. The extra mass is the reason an industrial set feels solid in a way a lighter frame does not, and it is also why the tables come knocked down: assembled, a 1200 mm table is a two-person lift.
Bare iron rusts in a damp room, so every frame is either clear-lacquered or powder-coated. Clear lacquer keeps the mill scale and the darker tone; powder coat is the better choice within a mile of salt water.
Low-back chairs at bar height
The chairs are 900 mm overall with a 750 mm seat, so the back sits at the shoulder of a seated guest rather than above it. That keeps the room's sightlines open, which matters in a taproom where the bar back is the main feature.
