No decoration means the joinery is the design
On a minimal timber piece the joint is visible, so it has to be right. The leg-to-apron connection here is mortised and the shoulder is cut to sit tight against the apron face, which means the joint line reads as part of the geometry rather than as a gap that has been filled. Where a piece is painted or heavily stained, a filled gap is invisible; here it is the first thing anyone looks at.
The seat is shaped rather than flat. Flat seats on high chairs put the front edge into the thigh within half an hour, and the shaping is a shallow dish rather than a carve, which is why it does not show as decoration.
Solid wood at bar height moves more than at table height
The legs are long, so the same percentage of seasonal movement translates into a bigger change at the floor. The frame is designed with a small allowance at the joints so the legs can move without splitting the apron, and the top is fixed at four points rather than along its full length.
Finish that shows the grain
The lacquer is matte and thin, so the grain reads through it rather than sitting under a film. That is the right choice for a minimal piece and the wrong one for a floor that gets wiped hard every night; where the cleaning is aggressive we recommend the same set in an oil finish, which can be spot-repaired.
