Mortise and tenon, because a chair is a frame that gets pushed
Chairs are not static objects. It is dragged out, sat on at an angle, tipped back on two legs and pushed in again, and every one of those movements loads the leg-to-rail joint in a different direction. Dowel joints resist that for a while and then work loose, which is why so many bar chairs develop a wobble that no amount of tightening fixes. Mortise and tenon gives the joint a shoulder to sit on, so the load goes into the face of the timber rather than into the glue line alone.
On this set the front leg and the side rail are tenoned, and the corner is blocked behind the joint where it cannot be seen. The block is what stops the frame racking sideways when somebody leans back.
Leather on a traditional frame, and what it does at the seat
Leather over a hardwood frame behaves differently from leather over plywood, because the frame moves less and the cover stays tighter for longer. The seat is webbed rather than foam-only, so it gives slightly and recovers, which is what stops the front edge collapsing into a crease after a year of the same person sitting in the same place.
Where this set does not belong
This is a floor-height set at 750 and 450. It is not made for a standing zone and it should not be paired with a 1050 top. Where the room needs a standing height, the frame family carries a bar-height version and the finish can be matched across both.
