Two materials that do not compete
Bamboo and steel are both made from strips and both take a finish that shows their structure, so putting them together does not require one to imitate the other. That is why the pairing reads as deliberate. Bamboo on a timber frame is harder to get right, because the two grains fight; bamboo on steel has nothing to fight with.
The frame is left visible rather than covered by an apron, which also means the top can be thinner. Bamboo at 25 mm, spanning between exposed steel rails, does not need the thickness a timber top would need over an open span.
Bamboo in a tavern, over a decade
Strand bamboo takes dents rather than scratches, so a top in a working tavern develops a shallow unevenness that reads as patina. Sanding it back is a light operation rather than a refinish, because the material is uniform through its thickness rather than a veneer. That is the practical reason bamboo survives in rooms that heavy timber would have to be replaced in.
Sourcing and customisation
Tops are cut to size and the frame is made to match, so a run of tables along a wall can be one continuous top or separate tops with a gap. Both are quoted from the same drawing.
