Why a round top on a turned column still works
Round tops put the edge at a constant distance from the centre, so the table behaves the same from any side. On a 700 to 800 mm top that means three people can use it without anyone sitting at a corner. The turned column keeps the base narrow at the floor, so feet have somewhere to go, and the splayed legs put the support out at the perimeter where the leaning load arrives.
The joint between column and top is the one that fails on a cheap version. Here the column carries a plate that is screwed to the top with a slight allowance for movement, because a solid top on a fixed plate will split across the grain in a dry room.
Vintage is a set of proportions rather than a finish
The proportions come from the pre-war bar table: a top thinner than the base suggests, a column with a waist, and legs that splay rather than run straight. Getting those three right reads as vintage; getting them wrong and adding a dark stain reads as reproduction.
Two heights, one family
The same table is made at 1050 for standing and at 750 for seating, with the chair and stool available in matching frames. Rooms that mix both are common, and ordering together keeps the stain batch and the seat heights consistent.
