The rivets are structural, not painted on
Rivet edge on a table top is usually a strip of metal with domed heads pressed into it, and it is there to be seen. The version here is a steel band set into a rebate in the timber and fixed with actual rivets through the band and into the substrate, so the band cannot lift at a corner. That matters because the edge is what gets hit when a stool is pushed in, and a decorative band lifts at exactly that point.
It also holds the top together. Solid wood at 40 mm wants to move, and a band that runs the full perimeter restrains the two long edges, which is what keeps the top flat across a 1200 mm span.
18 kg of cast iron under the column
High tables get leaned on, and the lean arrives at the edge, roughly 500 mm from the centre. With 18 kg at the floor and a wide plate, that lean is resisted without the base needing to be bolted down. Where a lighter base is used, the same lean either walks the table across the floor over an evening or tips it, and neither is acceptable in a room with drinks in it.
Where the weight becomes a problem
Cast iron is heavy to move, and a room that reconfigures monthly will not enjoy it. If the floor plan changes often, the same top on a steel plate base is the better answer and we will quote it instead. This set is for rooms that put the furniture down and leave it.
