40 mm of top on a steel base, and where the weight goes
At 1050 mm the centre of gravity of a table with drinks on it sits well above the base plate, and the load arrives off-centre every time somebody leans on the edge. Timber at 40 mm adds mass at the top, which is the wrong place for it, so the base has to carry that. The floor plate here is sized to the footprint of the top rather than to the column, which is what stops the lean from turning into a tip.
The column is welded to the plate and bolted to the top through threaded inserts, so the top can come off for refinishing without the fixings stripping.
Loft detailing that is not decoration
The exposed steel and the thick timber are usually described as a style. Functionally they are a pair: the steel carries the load and does not move with humidity, and the timber gives the surface a person wants to put a hand on. Swapping either one for the cheaper alternative breaks the pairing.
Stools at 750, on the same frame family
The stools are the same frame and the same seat as the loose bar stools in the range, which matters when a room needs three more next year and the original order cannot be repeated exactly. Keeping the family constant is the only reliable way to add to a set later.
