Solid wood table, four seats
The plain four-leg frame survives in bars because of what it leaves visible: the floor under the table, which is where bags, feet and the guest who has stood up to talk all end up.

Open underneath, which is the point
Pedestals hide the floor under a table; four tapered legs leave it visible, and in a bar that space gets used — for bags, for feet, for the person who has stood up to talk to the next table. The taper also means the leg is slim where a shoe meets it and thick where the load is, which is the right way round.
What it does not do is let chairs pull in at the corner. On a table for four that is acceptable; the two long sides carry the seating.
Four seats and no more
Sizing for four keeps the table out of the way of the room. Tables sized for six get used by four and block a walk line for the whole evening; tables sized for four fill up.
Stain rather than paint, because a stained top can be repaired at the table and a painted one has to be redone whole.
Where it belongs
Seated floor at the back of a room, away from the bar line, where guests are staying for food and conversation rather than a quick drink. Close to the bar it loses to a poseur table every time, because nobody wants to sit down three steps from a crowd.
